Despite the many incredible ways museum education departments have pivoted their programming and workflow to be more equitable and accessible in light of a global pandemic and calls for social justice reform, many executives and administrators are still out of touch about the impact of these initiatives. As a result, many museum educators feel burned out and unsupported, finding it difficult to sustain themselves at their respective institutions - some even leaving the field altogether in pursuit of better financial support and working conditions.

How can we take care of ourselves, support our colleagues, and advocate for our needs in the midst of institutional uncertainty? How do we continue prioritizing museum education when there is disconnect between other departments and administrators? How can education leaders model sustainability within their departments? Ultimately, how can we sustain ourselves so that we can continue working towards equity and access in museums?

Join MESC at the 2023 Annual Institute as we continue exploring ways to address the lack of institutional support for educators and ways of building more empathy and compassion within the workplace.

MENTORSHIP opportunity spotlight with ACTIVATE protege

Meet participants of ArtsforLA’s mentorship program: ACTIVATE Protege! Ask questions, and learn how you can get involved as a mentor or a mentee.

ACTIVATE Protege is a 7-month program (April - October) where selected mentors and mentees meet regularly to discuss mutually agreed upon topics with an emphasis on the mentee’s areas of interest and desired professional growth. Participants receive personalized and invaluable professional development opportunities aimed to enrich the careers of both mentee and mentor.

Additionally, the program includes monthly cohort sessions exclusive to the mentees. These meetings are a way for the mentee cohort to create a community of peers, discuss relevant topics in leadership and the arts, and gain exclusive opportunities to speak with and learn from various arts leaders.

ACTIVATE Protege mentorship components are self-administered by its participants with guidance from program leads, while Mentee Cohort Sessions are led by members of the ACTIVATE Emerging Arts Leaders program. The process of building relationships and idea-sharing hopes to ignite new, innovative ways to approach leadership growth within the arts community.
